Alex Aza, Secretary, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services BREAKING NEWS: U.S. Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Alex Azar has accepted our invitation to speak at the 340B Coalition Summer Conference! Don’t miss this opportunity to hear from President Trump’s point man on lowering prescription drug prices. Secretary Azar was sworn in on Jan. 29, 2018. Azar has spent his career working in both the public and private sectors, as an attorney and in senior leadership roles focused on advancing healthcare reform, research and innovation.

From 2001 to 2007, Azar served at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services – first as its General Counsel (2001–2005) and then as Deputy Secretary. During his time as Deputy Secretary, Azar was involved in improving the department’s operations; advancing its emergency preparedness and response capabilities as well as its global health affairs activities; and helping oversee the rollout of the Medicare Part D prescription drug program.

In 2007, Azar rejoined the private sector as senior vice president for corporate affairs and communications at Eli Lilly and Co. From 2012 to 2017, he served as president of Lilly USA LLC, the company’s largest affiliate.

Azar clerked for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia prior to practicing law for several years. He graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in economics and government from Dartmouth College and earned his law degree from Yale University.

Conference attendees will also hear from Amy Walter, National Editor of the Cook Political Report, who will discuss the upcoming 2018 mid-term congressional elections. She joins a terrific lineup of experts on 340B policy, compliance, regulation and implementation.

Here's just a taste of the 340B issues that will be on the menu when an anticipated record-breaking +1,600 340B program stakeholders gather in Washington for the 340B Coalition Summer Conference:

The legislative front – Bills have been introduced in the U.S. House and Senate that would alter the 340B program, including scaling back hospital participation and reducing the number of sites eligible for discounts. Hearings have been held in the House and Senate and efforts to move legislation forward may occur in the future. President Trump’s “Put American Patients First” plan has been announced and is being actively debated on Capitol Hill and in boardrooms around the county.

The regulatory front – President Trump and Secretary Azar have released a "blueprint" for lowering drug prices that seeks public comment on a long list of policy questions regarding the 340B program. The administration has also proposed to extend the controversial 30% cut in Medicare Part B drug payments to many 340B hospitals into 2019. That cut is the subject of a federal lawsuit brought by national hospital associations and health systems who have challenged its legality. Legislation in Congress to reverse the cuts is pending and has nearly 200 sponsors, but it has not been scheduled for a vote.

For providers, pharmacies, service providers, drug manufacturers, and government agencies alike, attending the conference is the best way to stay on top of 340B.

We look forward to seeing you in July!
